A special love: homophones

griz: http://wordsmith.org/words/haplography.html
rev: Car talk had an interesting puzzler this weekend. And since I only hear Car Talk about every six months I'm sure I'll never hear the answer. What 5 letter english word can be turned into a homophone of itself by removing either the first or second letter?
rev: which of course requires me to reference this:
rev: http://pbskids.org/lions/songs/homophones_qt.html
griz: arg. now I'm going to have to figure it out, since I only hear car talk about once every month, and less since the local station re-arranged it's weekend schedule
griz: I'm guessing books about homophones are probably banned in Texas.

Jack says: 'm in the same boat on listening to the show and too lazy to get the podcast. I tried to get our princess to listen the one day, telling her they were in Cars, but she wouldn't buy it. I believe I figured out the homophone...

TransDutch says: There's an http://www.cartalk.com/content/puzzler/2007.html online archive, with questions and answers. So if you miss the show, you can still find out the answer. This week's question apparently won't be posted until tonight. I think I know the answer. It's strange and somewhat frightening.

Googler says: I know the answer or at least one of the answers. It is somewhere in the following list. You will have to read through a lot of text first. http://www.cooper.com/alan/homonym.html An Ode to the Spelling Chequer Prays the Lord for the spelling chequer That came with our pea sea! Mecca mistake and it puts you rite Its so easy to ewes, you sea. I never used to no, was it e before eye? (Four sometimes its eye before e.) But now I've discovered the quay to success It's as simple as won, too, free! Sew watt if you lose a letter or two, The whirled won't come two an end! Can't you sea? TransDutch says: I don't see a homophone in that list that fits the requirement...where if you remove the first or second letter, you are left with a homophone of the original word. Here's the answer http://cartalk.com/content/puzzler/transcripts/200717/answer.html Car Talk came up with. It wasn't the one I came up with. Mine, as I said, was strange and somewhat frightening. Downright eerie in fact. Theirs wasn't.
